Eames in 90 Seconds: Revell Toy House
In 1959, Charles and Ray #Eames designed a 3/4th-inch scale model house for Revell Company, a toy manufacturer. Unfortunately, the prototype, known as the Revell Toy House, never made it to market, though it did become a helpful tool for Herman Miller.

The Eames Molded Plywood Folding Screen, aka FSW or Folding Screen Wood, had its origins in Charles and Ray Eames’s earliest plywood experiments and was first introduced in 1946. They are exceptional room dividers, backdrops, and, as it turns out, the perfect background for your Zoom meetings. Story by Daniel Ostroff, Produced by Daniel Ostroff. Eames Archives: The LCW - A New Furniture Design

Time Magazine branded the Eames LCW “The Chair of the Century,” and this year marks the 75th anniversary of the chair’s existence. Despite seeming superbly contemporary, one may not realize that today’s highly-coveted LCW has close ties with the end of WWII and that its legacy flourished from an early partnership with Herman Miller. Let’s explore the early moments of the LCW’s history, beginnin...

Eames Archives: Celebrating Ray
Переглядів 1,7 тис.3 роки тому
In 1944, Ray Eames, a high-spirited and trained abstract painter, participated in a group exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Additionally, Ray wrote about the show for the October 1944 installment of Arts & Architecture magazine, an issue whose cover she also designed. Her writing spanned beyond the scope of art. It reads philosophically. Read more about this connection in our ...
Eames Archives: Thinking of Bucky and The Toy

Released to children across the country in 1951, The Toy was neatly packaged in a hexagonal tube. Its contents were simple: triangular panels of thick paper, wooden dowels, and colored wire attachments. When speaking about the toy’s early design stages, Charles and Ray made it known that many of the Eames Office’s projects were designed for or inspired by a particular friend, and often translat...

There is a misconception about Charles and Ray Eames: they spent a great deal of time entertaining, socializing, and traveling. This idea isn’t necessarily true because they spent most of their time working. If they traveled, it was often for business. Their friends were naturally curious and ambitious people-other designers, filmmakers, artists, and architects-who they sometimes collaborated w...

Eames Archives: The Solar Toy and a Visual Language of Sorts
Переглядів 3,1 тис.3 роки тому
There is a very recognizably “Eames” quality to most of Charles and Ray’s furniture designs-and in their architecture, exhibitions, films, and toys. A visual language of sorts, that allows you to connect the dots along the output of the Eames Office. The Eames Solar Do-Nothing Machine was a solar-powered toy made as a commission for the Aluminum Company of America, or Alcoa, in 1957. It was a m...

In a theatre adjacent to the IBM festivities at the Seattle World’s Fair, the #Eames film The House of Science was looped for the fair’s 9.6 million attendees. After the fair's six-month lifespan expired, IBM funded the reproduction of The House of Science so that it could be widely circulated. This particular film serves as a prime example of the Eames approach of distilling complex ideas down...

By piling, gluing, taping, or drawing over a photograph with imaginary components, Charles and Ray used images to convey an idea and to test how a physical change would look before employing a great deal of effort and resources. They were using a photograph as a model for decision making. Read more about this process in our latest #EamesArchives blog: eames.link/collaging Eames Archives: An Ima...

this film is just one of my top 5 favourite of all times, this one particularly, forget about newer remakes. This is fantastic . the fact that it seems that there’s as much space , or void in the macroscopic perspective than in the microscopic between matter and the matter that begins to vibrate at the DNA level is just mind blowing…
